What is Keto?

After you consume carbohydrates, the body converts those into glucose (sugar) which it then turns to for energy. Because glucose is the simplest form of energy for the body to use, your body turns to this source first before turning to fat for fuel.

A keto diet is one that involves reducing this carb intake drastically and replacing it with healthy fats. Doing so puts your body in a metabolic state, called ketosis, where it focuses on burning fat for energy instead of the sugar created from carbs.

What does a ketogenic diet look like?

Keto is a high fat, low carb diet that consists of foods like: 

  • berries, nuts, and seeds
  • healthy fats from avocado and fish
  • whole cuts of meat or ground
  • Leafy and crunchy vegetables like lettuce, kale, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower
  • eggs, butter and cream
  • unprocessed cheese like cheddar, goat, cream, blue or mozzarella
