Why the Co-op's Different:
Working with local farmers isn't easier or more efficient, but it's so clearly the right thing to do.
We've been working with Calvin since 1988 (that's almost 30 years!!) and other local farmers like him to change agriculture –
it's why we do what we do!
Your everyday choices at the grocery store truly do make a difference! #whyinewpi

New at Your Co-op: Local Pastured Duck Eggs!
Marion, Iowa – On Sale through July 5!
Silent E Farm's free range duck flock's diet is made up of free range forage (grass and insects), non-GMO egg layer feed, and sprouted black oil sunflower seeds. They rotate their ducks through different paddocks so they always have access to fresh, grassy, open spaces!
Why duck eggs?
Duck eggs are about twice the size of chicken eggs, and it turns out duck eggs have a higher concentration of nutrients and protein, with a larger, richer, creamy yolk, and can sometimes be consumed by those who are allergic to chicken eggs because they have a different protein makeup! Yards for Kids, and Pets, & Pollinators!
We are SO excited that the City of Iowa City and the Iowa City School District have now eliminated chemical spraying in our schools, parks, and city property! Check out this map by Good Neighbor Iowa of childcare centers, parks, schools, and institutions that are leading the way by pledging not to use pesticides (common lawn weedkillers, insecticides, and fungicides – known to be toxic to children, pets, and our rivers) to protect child health and local streams.
Your Co-op is the first grocery to pledge chemical-free! We hope other grocery stores, schools, churches, businesses, residents (list your lawn as pesticide free to pledge your support as a good neighbor – for a step further, check out this resource for planning edible gardens, monarch habitat, and school gardens) and municipalities will follow suit to protect child health, water quality, and biodiversity!
Stop by your Co-op to sign a pledge to not use lawn chemicals, and feel free to pick up a small yard sign – we're happy to offer them for $2, the cost of printing them – we're the only place you can get them in town.
