Let’s get moving! There’s no better way to celebrate the summer than to have family fun in the great outdoors! We are so lucky to be in Eastern Iowa – a veritable playground of outdoor awesome that we can share with the kids in our lives. Ready to get the whole family moving? Here are a few of New Pi’s favorite local adventure locales and activities:

Fin & Feather H2O at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area in Iowa City offers a range of rental equipment for sporting fun on Sand Lake, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and peddle boats. This is a great option for a range of ability levels, and H2O’s staff can help you find the best fit for your crew. There’s even has a snack bar for feeding your hungry athletes.

If you want to saddle up on mountain bikes, there are a lot of options in the area! In North Liberty, Iowa Coalition of Off-Road Riders (ICORR) is “dedicated to building and maintaining sustainable mountain biking trails at Sugar Bottom Trails, and surrounding areas.” ICORR’s website provides maps, event info, and trail closures. There’s also a new singletrack loop in Coralville called Woodpecker Trail.

The Linn Area Mountain Bike Association (LAMBA) works on “creating and maintaining opportunities for sustainable natural singletrack mountain biking trails in the Linn County area of Iowa.” LAMBA’s website provides maps and trail information for Squaw Creek, Beverly Park, and Sac & Fox. Later this summer, Mt. Trashmore’s eagerly awaited trails are expected to open. Follow updates here.

Manchester Whitewater Park is a great place to ride the rapids on the Maquoketa River. Bring your own tubes and kayaks, or rent them from a local outfitter.

Swimming is the quintessential summer pastime, and most of us don’t have to travel far to find a cool outdoor pool. We love the classic, no-frills pool at City Park in Iowa City, as well as the big slides, splash deck, and snack bar at both Coralville Community Aquatic Center and North Liberty’s Pacha Aquatics Center. Tipton’s James Kennedy Family Aquatic Center has the area’s only indoor-outdoor pool complex, which features concessions, slides, and a zero-entry area. Cedar Rapids is full of swim fun, with three outdoor pools and two outdoor aquatic centers.

So leave the couch behind! Step outside for an active family adventure. You’ll be healthier and happier all together. :)
