In June, New Pi will raise money for two organizations doing great work not just providing good, healthy food to those in need, but which also offer opportunities to learn farming and help others through food production.
In Cedar Rapids, we will round up at the registers for Feed Iowa First. Their mission is to “combat food insecurity by growing food and farmers.” Aligning themselves with dozens of area businesses, schools, churches, and community agencies, Feed Iowa First is an urban farming revolution in the making. They provide produce to those in need at no cost, and no eligibility application is required. The produce that they distribute is specifically grown for people who are struggling with access to fresh, healthy, and affordable produce. Anyone can volunteer their time or their land. In Iowa City and Coralville, we will round up at the registers for Grow: Johnson County, a group that believes “good food is a human right.” That’s why they’ve made it their mission to improve access to healthy foods through charitable food production and hands-on education. Grow: Johnson County is a program of Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development working on four acres of land at the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm to educate and empower the next generation of famers.
