Locally Grown Clothing Company
Sue Andrews, Wellness Department Manager
In the wellness department we have a new product that I am super excited about.
We're happy to introduce a line of t-shirts from the Locally Grown Clothing Company based in Des Moines. You may have already seen the display in the stores, if not, make a point to check them out. These tees are made in the U.S.A. and have great messages on them that align with the ideals of our Co-op. How cool is that?
So who are Locally Grown Clothing Company? They are a grassroots, message driven, lifestyle apparel company that consists of two guys who started selling Locally Grown t-shirts at the Des Moines Farmers' Market. Being a vendor at the Farmers' Market taught them important lessons about the challenges facing family farms today. It also showed them the importance of buying local, promoting sustainable practices, and supporting family farmers.
Although Locally Grown do not make their own products, unlike most companies they place a high priority on sourcing and manufacturing their products in the U.S.A. Going against the grain in an industry dominated by overseas manufacturing is extremely challenging. This company works with manufacturers in the United States that share their core values of integrity and environmentalism. This high-quality product does come at a higher price.
The minute I put the t-shirts on the sales floor, I received many comments regarding the price. And if you saw Food, Inc. you know that you are getting what you pay for. So if you want a t-shirt made in another country without UN fair labor practices and shipped here using lots of fossil fuels, then these are not the shirts for you.
Okay, enough preaching to the choir. If you like them, then buy them and know that you are supporting a local company with good values. Spread that good karma throughout the land!
