Call 319 358-5513 and ask for our pastry department. We request 48 hours advanced notice for most orders. Some special orders may require more advanced notice. Rush orders (less than 48 hours) may be subject to a 20% rush order charge. Orders can be picked up at either location. We have a wide selection of cakes and pastries available everyday at either location for walk-in customers.
Making Your Day, Every Day
New Pi’s fabulous pastry department offers a full line of pastries, from a simple apple spice bar to a multi-tiered wedding cake for 500. We use only all natural ingredients, with no artificial flavors, colors, or additives. Unlike most bakeries, every single product we offer is trans-fat free. Additionally, we try to use local and organic products when feasible. We currently use Farmers’ All Natural Organic Butter in all of our products. During the summer, we utilize local tomatoes and herbs for savory scones.
Handmade With Care
Almost every product New Pioneer sells is made from scratch in our Coralville pastry kitchen. We are one of the few bakeries in the area that makes every cake from scratch— never from a mix. The quality, taste, and beauty of our natural products make the Co-op’s pastry the best choice around.
Meeting Special Dietary Needs
New Pi pastry is the only regional source for many dietary-restricted dessert lovers. We offer (or can specially make to order) products that are vegan, no wheat, no refined sugar, reduced fat, dairy-free, or egg-free. We do our best to craft desserts and pastries to meet all your dietary needs.
The Art of Pastry
The creative team of pastry staff at New Pioneer is filled with a variety of talent — from painters, photographers, and musicians, to teachers and students — you name it, they’ve done it. We have bakers that have worked in bakeries in Mexico and Honduras. Pastry Department Manager Craig Albright has worked in restaurants for over twenty years and has an MFA in painting. Our staff is highly artistic and playful — they love to “bring their art to the table,” and it shows in the variety of our cake designs and pastry creations. Each unique item is baked with love, and each day we strive to bring a new flavor, combination, or recipe into our stores.
Our History
While New Pi has been selling groceries for over thirty-five years, our pastry department is a fairly recent addition. For years Co-opers enjoyed scones, muffins and cookies made daily in a little corner of our deli kitchen. By the year 2000, we had established an independent department offering full service cakes and pastries. Since 2001 our pastry department has moved three times, grown to a staff of over ten full-time baker/decorators, and more than tripled its sales. Currently our pastry department is located at the Coralville store, where we share space and ovens with the bakehouse bread bakery. The combined sales of New Pioneer’s bakehouse and pastry departments make it the second-largest bakery among co-ops in the United States.
